MEMO in conversation with: Prof Khairudin Aljunied

Prof Aljunied believes discussions on the Muslim Ummah should not centre around the Middle East but include Southeast Asian voices who, though make up a larger section of the global Muslim population, are disproportionately represented

Join us for a conversation with Professor Khairudin Aljunied as we discuss his latest book 'Shapers of Islam in Southeast Asia', which attempts to capture the progressive and pluralistic nature of Islamic conformism in Southeast Asia from the mid-20th century onwards, as well as the impact of the Middle East on Malaysian scholars and vice versa.

Prof Aljunied is a Professor at the University of Malaya and Senior Fellow at the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University. He's the author of several books including 'Colonialism, Violence and Muslims in Southeast Asia', 'Muslim Cosmopolitanism: Southeast Asian Islam in Comparative Perspective', and 'Hamka and Islam: Cosmopolitan Reform in the Malay World'.
